Home Guides Switzerland Childcare — Daycare and Costs

Family

Organise childcare

Day-care centres in the cities are regularly fully booked; waiting times of six to twelve months are common, so applying to several at once pays off. Places are charged for; many municipalities subsidise them according to income through childcare vouchers or subsidies. Besides day-care centres there are childminding families, after-school care such as day-care clubs and lunch tables, and playgroups. Your municipality is responsible; contributions are regulated differently by canton and municipality.

Checklist

  1. Look for day-care centres and childminders where you live

Your municipality keeps the list of licensed facilities.

  2. Put your child on waiting lists

Waiting times of 6 to 12 months are common in cities; several parallel applications are advisable.

  3. Apply for childcare vouchers or subsidies

Many municipalities reduce the rates according to income; you apply through your municipality.

  4. Check after-school care

Day-care clubs, lunch tables and care outside school hours are offered by the school authority and require a separate registration.

Costs

  • Day-care fee not quantified

No total: the items depend on conditions and on your situation. A total without your answers would be too high or too low depending on the case — the cost calculation in your plan uses them.
