Cross-border commuters: register with the cantonal migration authority

Cross-border commuters do not register with a Swiss municipality; they are registered in the canton of their workplace. The employer usually files the application with the cantonal migration authority, which results in permit G. It requires a place of residence abroad, to which you generally return every week. Any change of job, work canton or foreign residence must be reported to the authority.

Who this applies to. This guide applies if the cross-border commuter status is yes.

Checklist

  1. Hand your employment contract to your employer for the application

The employer files the application with the cantonal migration authority of the place of work.

  2. Obtain proof of residence in the neighbouring country

Registration confirmation from your foreign place of residence; it documents the weekly return that permit G requires.

  3. Collect permit G

Issued by the canton of your workplace and must be carried at work.

  4. Report a change of job or residence

Every change must be reported to the cantonal migration authority, otherwise the permit loses its basis.

Costs

  • Permit fee not quantified

No total: the items depend on conditions and on your situation. A total without your answers would be too high or too low depending on the case — the cost calculation in your plan uses them.
