Cross-border commuters: exercise the health insurance right of option
Cross-border commuters are in principle subject to compulsory health insurance in Switzerland, but under the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons they may insure themselves in their country of residence. This right of option must be exercised with the responsible cantonal office within three months of starting work and generally applies for the entire duration of employment; a later change is only possible on a qualifying event. The choice also affects non-working family members.
Who this applies to. This guide applies if the cross-border commuter status is yes.
Checklist
-
Identify the responsible cantonal office
The office designated by the canton of employment accepts the exemption request.
-
Compare cover in both countries
Premiums, benefits and where you may be treated differ considerably on either side of the border.
-
File the exemption request within 3 months
The deadline runs from the start of your employment; afterwards Swiss compulsory insurance applies.
-
Clarify the choice for family members
Non-working family members generally follow the choice made by the employed person.
Costs
-
Premium in the country of residence not quantified
The premium follows the health insurance system of your country of residence, not a Swiss tariff.
No total: the items depend on conditions and on your situation. A total without your answers would be too high or too low depending on the case — the cost calculation in your plan uses them.
