Home Guides Deregistering Your Previous Residence — Checklist

Arrival and Registration

Deregister at your previous place of residence

A move away from a Swiss municipality is reported to the residents' registration office of the previous municipality, in many cantons online via eUmzugCH. If you are moving from abroad, the registration law of your previous country of residence applies. Its confirmation of deregistration is regularly required in Switzerland: when registering with the municipality, for tax purposes and for the duty-free declaration of your household goods. Keep it, and update your postal address, bank, insurers and subscriptions at the same time.

Checklist

  1. Complete the deregistration with your previous registration office

Moving within Switzerland: the residents' registration office of your previous municipality, in many places online via eUmzugCH. Moving from abroad: the registration authority there.

  2. Request and keep the confirmation of deregistration

Required when registering with your Swiss municipality and for the duty-free import of household goods with the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (federal).

  3. Update ongoing contracts and addresses

Postal redirection order, bank, insurers, subscriptions and your employer.

  4. Settle taxes and social insurance at your previous residence

The tax office of your previous place of residence issues the final assessment; clarify open questions before you leave.

Costs

  • Deregistration fee not quantified

Within Switzerland, deregistration is normally free of charge. If you are moving from abroad, any fee is set by your previous country of residence.

No total: the items depend on conditions and on your situation. A total without your answers would be too high or too low depending on the case — the cost calculation in your plan uses them.
