Home Guides Switzerland Permit G — Cross-Border Commuters

Residence Permits

Apply for permit G (cross-border commuter permit)

Permit G entitles you to work in Switzerland while living abroad. It is issued by the cantonal migration authority of your place of work; it is valid for five years for EU/EFTA nationals and one year for third-country nationals. As a rule you must return to your foreign place of residence every week. A change of job must be reported; a change of work canton requires a new permit.

Who this applies to. This guide applies if the nationality group is not Switzerland and the cross-border commuter status is yes.

Checklist

  1. File the application through your employer

The cantonal migration authority of your workplace is responsible, not the one where you live.

  2. Enclose proof of residence and your employment contract

Registration confirmation from your foreign place of residence and the signed employment contract.

  3. Collect permit G

Valid for 5 years for EU/EFTA nationals and 1 year for third-country nationals.

  4. Report a change of job or canton

A change of work canton requires a new permit, not merely a notification to the previous authority.
